It is with great sadness that we have heard of the death this week of Donal Toolan. Donal was a leading Irish disability rights activist, actor, broadcaster and journalist. He was the founder and co-ordinator of the Forum of People with Disabilities and was hugely respected in Ireland as a deeply committed advocate for legislation on disability rights. It is because Donal was a great actor that made him well known in this country. He performed with Graeae Theatre Company in Jenny Sealey’s production of ‘Bent’ in 2004. In 2007 he attended the Cardiff launch of Arts & Disability Ireland’s ‘Face On’ a publication edited by Kaite O’Reilly. Donal spoke with passion and humour about the importance of disability arts, he was a wise and witty man who will be greatly missed. Our thoughts are with his family and friends in Ireland.
