DAC Letter from the Director

Dear DAC Members,

Diolch yn fawr to all our members who have participated in our Outdoors / Indoors visual art and creative word opportunities, it has been a very busy and rewarding few weeks for DAC.

DAC Art Prize Zoom Event

Last Friday we hosted a successful zoom event for 100 people to celebrate the work created by our artists and writers. We welcomed Jane Hutt MS, staff of ACW, the Judges from Wales, Singapore and the USA, Andrew Miller, British Council staff and the shortlisted artists and writers. Below are some extracts from the speakers:

Andrew Miller #WeShallNotBeRemoved

“The headlines are: 77 per cent of disabled audiences consider themselves to be vulnerable to coronavirus whilst only 28 per cent of non-disabled audiences do. That conveys vastly different priorities and concerns between disabled and non-disabled people. And with good reason. As disabled people account for over a third of all UK coronavirus deaths. A shockingly unreported statistic.”

One of the selecting panel – Fran Ledonio Flaherty from Pittsburg, USA

“It was a great group of jurors, some local Welsh people and some international and our ability to connect and listen to each other about the art work. We all had different opinions – strong opinions, some of us -but we listened to each other and we worked together and we were able to, with difficulty, curate and award a prize.”

Nick Capaldi CEO Arts Council Wales

“Disability Arts Cymru is one of the longest serving disability arts companies in the UK and has a growing and exhaustive membership of disabled and deaf artists. Through these awards, Disability Arts Cymru is helping to grow the profile and the international connections of and for Welsh artists. These unprecedented times are showing us how we can still make strong relationships across the globe. We are delighted that Disability Arts Cymru is showing us by example what is possible.”

Huge congratulations to the Winners and Highly Commended artists and writers.

Crip Talks

Following on from the success of our previous zoom conversations we are now able to share with you the details of our next two events. The first of these looks at the experience of Deaf artists who also experience discrimination from within the Deaf community in the case of film-maker Rinkoo Barpaga and from her own country in the case of artist Maral Mamaghanizedeth. Both have very compelling stories to tell. We will have only 100 places at the webinar, but if we get more bookings than that we will set up a livestream channel. The event will be hosted by Jonny Cotsen.
