The Artist’s Voice: the European Outsider Art Association Conference 2018

Pallant House Gallery, Chichester, 4th – 6th May 2018

From 4th – 6th May 2018, Outside In is hosting the European Outsider Art Association Conference at Pallant House Gallery, Chichester. This year’s conference focuses on the Artist’s Voice, celebrating the work of excluded and non-traditional artists and sharing best practice in the field through a series of presentations, key note speeches, and workshops delivered by artists and practitioners. The key note speech to open the conference on the Friday evening will be given by multi-disciplinary artist Bobby Baker, who created the touring exhibition Diary Drawings: Mental Illness and Me 1997 – 2008, and was commissioned as part of the London 2012 Unlimited project for the Cultural Olympiad.

Presenters at the conference include the Living Museum (the Netherlands), Out by Art (Sweden), Venture Arts (UK), Joy of Sound (UK), and Look Kloser (UK). Panel discussions will focus on supporting the artist’s voice and exhibiting the artist’s voice, and panellists will include Garvald Artists (Scotland), Headway East London (UK), Arts Project Australia (Australia), Blue Circus (Finland), Creahm/MadMusee (Belgium), and Creative Minds (UK).

Tickets are priced at £150 for the full weekend. There are options to add on a dinner at Pallant House Gallery following the key note speech on the Friday, and you can join us for a VIP programme in the days leading up to the conference for an additional £75.

Art Co-commission Opportunity!

Outside In and Pallant House Gallery are offering an exciting opportunity for Outside In artists to submit proposals for a co-commission responding to the work of artist Scottie Wilson. The successful artist or artists will be commissioned to create artwork that will be exhibited at Pallant House Gallery alongside Scottie Wilson’s work from the Gallery’s permanent collection in May 2018. The successful artist or artists will receive £4,000 for the commission.

About the commission

This commission is open to all Outside In artists based in the UK. The final work should be primarily new work or it can be existing work which can be displayed in a new way. We are also open to proposals from artists wishing to work collaboratively on the commission.

We encourage artists to explore whichever aspects of Scottie Wilson’s work are particularly interesting or meaningful to them. This could be the way he creates his work compulsively, his themes of ‘greedies’ or ‘evils’, or the imaginative worlds he has created using different animals, nature and faces (see below for more information on Scottie Wilson). We encourage all art forms for the proposal, including painting, drawing, sculpture, photography and installation.

The commission will be exhibited at Pallant House Gallery in Chichester in Room 6, alongside work by Scottie Wilson from Pallant House Gallery’s permanent collection. To view works by Scottie Wilson, you can look at this web page: www.outsidein.org.uk/Scottie-Wilson.

The successful artist(s) will receive £4,000 for the commission to cover the cost of their materials, travel, and time. Outside In are able to provide support with managing this budget if needed.

There will be 8 weeks available to create the commission. The successful artist(s) will also be appointed a mentor who can provide support during the making time.

To receive an application form and information pack, book a place on an Artist Support Day, or find out more about the co-commission, please contact Hannah Whitlock, Outside In Artist Development Coordinator, either by emailing [email protected] or by calling 01243 770845.
