Helfa Gelf Open Studios

Registration Extended!

As we have no booklet deadline this year, registrations have been extended and you can now register up to 11th June!

The Open Studios will run across the four weekends of September as usual :
7th – 9th, 14th – 16th, 21st – 23rd and 28th – 30th, with optional late night opening on Fridays (also as usual!)

In addition we have a super range of exhibition and residency opportunities for members at galleries across North Wales, including:

collaborations at Tŷ Pawb and UnDegUn, Wrecsam
a new collaboration with Plas Glyn y Weddw
a new residency at Stiwdio Maelor
a repeat of the popular exhibition at the beautiful Oriel Brondanw
a superb opportunity for artists with an interest in using new technology for their creative practice at Arloesi Pontio InnovationCall_out_Edge_2_Pontio .docx

Again there will be:
residencies at Galeri Caernarfon and Ruthin Craft Centre
exhibitions at the café at Oriel Mostyn
and lots more !

The first stage of our website makeover is now unveiled and it includes a simplified online registration process – if you are re-registering you will be asked to check and update last year’s information, new members will need to input their details …… so ensure you have all particulars to hand.   Go to www.helfagelf.co.uk to register.
Payment this year will only be possible by credit or debit card.

Having not raised prices significantly for many years, this year we are raising existing price bands slightly, and introducing new price bands:
Silver (for one artist)                                           £70
Gold I (up to 3 artists),                                        £120
Gold II (4 – 9 artists),                                          £185
Gold III (10 + artists)                                         £250
However as part of our shiny new look, group pages will now feature an entry of art image, name and brief contact details for each artist.   Make sure you are included if you want to be considered for an exhibition!
Bronze (webpage only) remains the same at        £35
Finally, as outlined in the last mailing, at the request of our funders, but also in response to feedback from last year, we are not going to produce the big booklet this year – for one thing it has proved almost impossible to produce a booklet with legible print and maps for the money we have available.  Instead we will shortly bring out a leaflet with details of our event and from the money saved by this we can fund better distribution and better promotion via the clusters, plus more emphasis on digital marketing via social media and the website, and online generally.
This will include year round integrated social media coverage including Instagram, Twitter and Facebook, and linking into ‘featured artist of the week’ on the website, plus an improved website including:
mobile friendly website
cluster maps downloadable as pdf
fully interactive maps on website
improved search facility which shows which studios open each day
personalisable downloadable trail map for visitors.

We are very excited by the possibilities this year, and we hope you can join us!
Please email [email protected] if you have any questions.

Arloesi Pontio Innovation

As part of our training and exhibition programme, and as a response to the interest in the Edge exhibition and seminar at Arloesi Pontio Innovation last November, we will be coordinating a mentoring and training programme followed by a curated exhibition in Arloesi Pontio Innovation’s White Box.

Do you have an interest in using new technology within your work?

Exhibition brief:  “Edge 2”

Artists will address questions about the modern world and our human experience within it.  Artists will use new technologies to innovate and push boundaries in their creative practice, helping them develop exciting new ways to better address questions about contemporary life.

Innovation

The artists involved will use the technologies available in Arloesi Pontio Innovation ‘fabLAB’ from laser cutters, to scanners and 3D printers. Exploration of these new technologies will inform and innovate the creative practice of the artists.

Engagement

The artists will share their journey and talk about their practice and use of the ‘fabLAB’ to Helfa Gelf/AAF members and the wider creative community. This will involve an exhibition launch event and artists will also be available at times during the exhibition period.

Economic Regeneration

The exhibition will allow local artists, business people and Helfa Gelf/AAF members to understand the potential of using new technologies as a creative tool and the different ways those technologies could contribute to the development of their own creative or commercial practice.

Selection

We will be selecting a maximum of 8 visual artists who would like to spend more time in Arloesi Pontio Innovation and be part of a group exhibition at White Box, from Friday 18th Jan to Monday 11th February 2019.  You will be offered on-going mentoring support from the mentor/curator.  The selection panel will include Helfa Gelf representation and the Edge 2 curator. The mentor/curator is Remy Dean, artist, author (including Evolution of Western Art), critic and Creative Agent, who has many years’ experience as an arts tutor, coaching creatives from concept to outcome.

Arloesi Pontio Innovation part of the University of Bangor, is a leading innovation centre and one of the UK’s finest maker spaces.  API is a place where the arts meets science.  Pontio fabLAB is a facility where you can gain access to digital manufacturing and prototyping equipment.  For more information Pontio Innovation fabLAB and follow the “innovation” tab then click on “fabLAB”.

Application process:

If you would like to apply please email: [email protected].

Helfa Gelf Open Studios 2018/19 programme

We are getting close to the time for opening registration for this year’s Open Studios event, and we have already been planning furiously.

We know we have funding for our Training Programme and you will have seen mailings about forthcoming events.

However we don’t yet know whether we will get Arts Council Wales funding for the Open Studio event, and may not know until the end of March.   We are intending to go ahead in one form or another whether we get funding or not, and have an exciting programme of exhibitions lined up.  In any case Bronze membership, giving a year’s access to a webpage, exhibitions and reduced cost training benefits, will be going ahead unchanged.

Also we have been updating the website, with an attractive new look to the Home pages and a simplified registration process, which will require you to enter all information for the booklet before you pay – so make sure you have all the information you need to start with!

You may notice we have just advertised for a Project Coordinator, so if you are interested do get in touch via [email protected]for more information, or pass the details on to anyone else you think might like to do it.
