Jill Powell

Hi my name is Gill Powell and I recently graduated with a BA (hons) in Art Practice from the University of South Wales, previously Glamorgan University.  When I left school I trained as a Biomedical Scientist and worked in pathology laboratories until I had my children.  Unfortunately soon after my youngest was 4 years old I became very ill and had to give up work.  But, luckily, I had always loved art from a very early age and had been dabbling in different projects for years.  For example painting scenery for the local Chapel and Youth Theatre Groups, painting murals for nurseries and designing a website for the Congress Theatre in Cwmbran and for my own Science Fiction/ Fantasy site.  Eventually I decided to pursue my love of art seriously and enrolled in a National Diploma in Graphic Design at Pontypool Tertiary College. I moved on to do a B. A. (Hons) Degree as a mature student. To me, creating Art has been a lifeline for my mental health. It makes me happy and energised and has let me find a way of expressing myself when all other forms of communication had dried up.
