Maria Hayes is a professional artist and educator and has worked in a freelance capacity since 1986 throughout the UK and internationally. Hayes collaborates with musicians, dancers, actors, storytellers and poets on performance based projects. She has shown work in galleries and at live events across the UK since 1986 and is regularly commissioned to devise and deliver workshops, training and longer courses for schools, gallery and higher education.
Based in Blaenau Ffestiniog, North Wales, Hayes has recently completed a practice based PhD (Fine Art) at Aberystwyth University. Her main practice is drawing and she explores the territory between analogue and digital methods of mark making. Exploring methods to draw movement she combines observational drawing practices with digital technologies. In this way Hayes connects past traditions with present and future image making. Hayes seeks to reconcile the physicality of the body working with materials with the virtual life of the imagination by manipulating pixels.
In April 2012, Hayes received a Drawing Inspiration Award for her Energy Gift Exchange project, which was part of the Big Draw events in 2011. In October 2012 Action for Children’s Arts awarded her a Member’s Award for her ‘contribution to the enrichment of children’s lives through the arts’. Hayes received her Members Award at BAFTA in 2012.
Hayes’s work is in private and public collections nationally and internationally.
Hayes is a long term sufferer of autoimmune conditions.
