Exciting news from Taking Flight Theatre Company

We’re opening a Youth Theatre for young D/deaf & Hard of Hearing people  Autumn 2019 in Cardiff!

For 4 years we have been dreaming of a Deaf lead youth theatre specifically for D/deaf and Hard of Hearing young people in Wales. London has one… why not Cardiff? Some of you might remember that we ran a couple of week long summer schools back in 2015 during which we met some wonderfully inspiring young people (one of whom now works for ITV no less!)

2 years ago we began the long process of applying for funding. And now we’re here to announce to the world… to shout- and sign- from the rooftops that we’ve made it. BBC Children in Need have approved our application to run a youth theatre in Cardiff for 3 years.

The Youth Theatre- yet to be named- will run out of The Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff Bay, and we want to say a massive diolch to them for supporting this project.

There will be 3 age groups: 4-7, 8-11 and 12-18 so little ones won’t have to wait long until they can join!
All the groups will be lead by a Deaf facilitator and sessions will run in BSL and English, with interpreters present too.

Throughout the 3 years, there will be bags of opportunities for young people to perform, to share what they’ve learnt, to get involved in the non performing aspects of theatre production, to grow in confidence and to be inspired. At least once a year we’ll be organising trips to see the very best in Deaf lead theatre and performance. We’ll also be bringing in inspiring Deaf creatives and theatre practitioners to work with our young groups on specific skills. We just cannot wait to be doing all these things, and for our Deaf leaders to be inspiring the #DeafTalent of the future.

So what does this mean to you?

Perhaps you know of a D/deaf or Hard of Hearing young person who would like to join. If you do, drop me an email on
[email protected]
and we can make sure they know when we open in the Autumn. If they’re currently too young, let us know anyway and we can put them on the waiting list.

Perhaps you’re over 18 and would like to volunteer. If this is the case, also drop me a line and we can discuss this in more detail. We’re especially keen to hear from potential volunteers who have some BSL skills.

Keep an eye out on our website and social media too as we’ll be recruiting very soon for a Deaf leader and an assistant facilitator. Could either of these roles be you?

Perhaps you’re a Deaf arts professional who has a skill you’d like to share with our groups.

And look out as we’ll be inviting people to our sharings once the youth theatres start creating.

In the meantime, we’ve applied to be part of the Christmas Big Give to raise further funds to support the Youth Theatre. If you think you could be one of our start off big pledgers (rather than a donor during Big Give Week) let us know and we can send you a pledge form. We need to raise £1250 by the 30th August in pledges to be part of the week.

Each day is a journey of looking and experiencing nature, of how mother earth presents herself to the world. Marks left in the sand by the receding tide, sharp and clear, to deep gullies or smooth. Items thrown up by the tide, battered by storms. Different seaweed flowing in ribbons. The erosion of surfaces be they shells, rocks, driftwood or bone .

An intuitive process of making, and pinching of clay; my work is made using flattened coils of clay into which other materials are added to change the surface texture, clays and sands.  The work is pushed and pinched causing crators and holes.
