Wait Until Dark

Audio described performance 18th November 2.30pm

From the hand of Frederick Knott, author of Dial M for Murder, and the producers behind Night Must Fall and Birdsong, comes a major revival of the classic, edge of your seat thriller Wait Until Dark.

Set amidst the social turbulence of 60s London the play follows the story of Suzy, a blind woman who left alone in her apartment becomes embroiled with a group of conmen hatching an elaborate scam. As the tension notches up, Suzy is left to fend for herself but with the phone line cut dead and the house plunged into darkness, can Suzy outwit the murderous visitors?

Wait Until Dark, made into a film starring Audrey Hepburn in 1967, is often ranked as one of the top 100 scariest films of all time and this exciting new production reclaims it for the stage.

We are delighted that Karina Jones is playing Suzy in this production, this is what Karina has to say about being involved:

I am very excited to bring Wait Until Dark to Cardiff New Theatre in just a few weeks’ time. Being from Llandudno it’s great to be bringing the show closer to home. It is definitely a week I am looking forward to.

Working as a blind actress is what I’m used to, so I don’t really know any different, but I do know that it makes an already difficult industry even more difficult. It can be very tough getting cast as a non-sighted character let alone being cast as someone who is sighted! I also work in a different way to sighted actors as I can’t sight-read and lots of plays aren’t yet available as audio books so this is something I have to find another way round. I have my script recorded which I listen to and during rehearsals I have my lines fed through an ear piece.

With Wait Until Dark we had the set from the first day of rehearsals which meant I could really get used to it. We also have lots of fight choreography which I have loved doing. I have to trip over a lot and there are complicated fight sequences that I enjoy too. We had a great fight team so I didn’t find them difficult to learn at all.

I wish it hadn’t taken so long for a blind actress to take on this role (it’s the 50th anniversary this month!) but I am delighted that Original Theatre Company have been so forward-thinking in appropriate casting. It has been a brilliant role to tackle as I have to be onstage for most of the play, a challenge I can really get my teeth stuck into. But what’s great about a mainstream company like Original casting disabled actors is that it sets a precedent that hopefully other companies and casting directors will take note of. It’s not a lack of disabled actors but a lack of awareness and opportunity in the industry but hopefully this will help in taking a positive step forward.

Small World Theatre – lantern making workshops

Small World Theatre welcomes you to one of the free lantern making workshops on Sundays 5th, 12th, 19th, 26th November at Small World Theatre, Cardigan. This year’s Lantern Parade on 8th December 7pm, is supported by Awards For All funding from the National Lottery. By constructing a lantern you will help make this creative town light up in time for Christmas!

Small World Theatre has joined forces with Cymdeithas Aberteifi Society and members of Cardigan’s Town Centre Partnership to create a magical spectacle and an event to be remembered. Last year the town was illuminated by 350 lanterns parading along the High Street towards the river Teifi. This year we expect an even bigger spectacle that will attract thousands of people.

The workshops begin at 11am. Please arrive promptly and wear clothes that you don’t mind getting messy. We encourage families to work together to create individual lanterns or one large one. You’ll be asked to take care of your lantern(s) at home before returning for the parade on 8th December. A few giant group lanterns will feature and some of these will be displayed in the town after the parade. You will all be able to take your lanterns home after the event and in time for Christmas.

Bring lunch – there will be tea and coffee available.

We’d like you to book ahead so we know how many staff we need to help. Please contact us on 01239 615 952 and speak to a member of Small World Theatre. Our Box Office open times are Tues – Fri, 10am – 4.30pm.

Suitable for all ages and abilities.

Admission free of charge.
