AVIVA Community Fund
7 days left to vote for Real Human Being
by Matthew Bulgo
In just 7 days, voting for the Aviva Community Fund will close. We desperately need your votes to help us re tour our amazingly impactful project, Real Human Being. This project works with young people in and out of school settings, over the course of a whole day and allows them to interact with the team in character and explore what motivates hate crime, what it is and how to report it. Most importantly, they have the chance to test out their own methods for dealing with bullying behaviour in a safe environment, by taking on the role of either the “victim” or the “bystander”. This is an incredibly empowering process and supports young people who may be being bullies, as well as encouraging participants to think about their own behaviours. A headteacher in a pupil referral unit in Powys told us ” One of our pupils, amazingly, identified herself completely with Cat (the perpetrator) and seriously challenged and questioned her own bullying behaviour for the first time that we have seen.” One young audience member said “This play made me realise I am not the only one getting bullied and I am not the only one that is sad and lonely. This play has helped me… stand up to the bullies. I hope it can help others that need it.” Please help us get this project out on the road again. If we were able to access this money from Aviva, we would like to start by touring Rhondda Cynon Taf where hate crime is at it’s highest level in Wales. We’d then use the opportunity to gather new evidence and support to make a large 3 year application to continue the project long- term.
