Welsh short film screens at the Middle East’s first ever Arts & Disability Festival

Turning Points

Chris Tally EvansDisabled Welsh filmmaker Chris Tally Evans is about to have his film Turning Points screened at the Middle East’s first ever arts & disability festival in Doha, Qatar in the United Arab Emirates.

The Qatar UK 2013 Arts and Disability Festival features four works from Unlimited, a celebration of art produced by Deaf and disabled artists that was held at the Southbank Centre in London last year, to coincide with the London 2012 Paralympic Games. New works were commissioned to encourage Deaf and disabled artists to push their artistic boundaries, as the Paralympic athletes pushed their sporting boundaries.

One of these commissions was Turning Points, the culmination of a two year long storytelling project where six life-changing stories were woven into a 10 minute film featuring, among others, Hollywood legend Sir Roger Moore and Olympian Jamie Baulch.

Inspired by the Qatar National Vision for 2030, Qatar UK 2013 aims to forge new partnerships between Qatar and the United Kingdom in the fields of art, culture, education, sport and science. Events are taking place throughout the year in Qatar and the UK to celebrate both countries’ cultures and to strengthen and develop mutual understanding and awareness.

A British Council spokesperson said, “We are very pleased to present the first ever Arts & Disability Festival in the Middle East in partnership with the Ministry of Culture, Arts & Heritage in Qatar, taking dance, music, visual arts and film created by leading British Deaf and disabled artists.”

Chris said, “It is remarkable to me that the lush Welsh landscape that also stars in my film will be seen in the deserts of the United Arab Emirates, and that younger players in the film such as schoolboy Daniel Chapman is now subtitled in Arabic to help a brand new audience understand what he has to say.”

Qatar UK 2013 runs from the 15th to the 30th March and Turning Points will be screened throughout the Festival. For more information visit www.christallyevans.com or http://www.qataruk2013.com/cms/en/events-information/turning-points
